Discontinued Gear- AT3525 Condenser

The AT3525

The AT3525

In a home studio situation, its not possible to have the greatest classic gear, you have to make do with what you can get your hands on.  When I started recording as a hobby, a friend let me use a pair of microphones that he must have picked up used at Guitar Center.  It turns out that I love these mics so much, that I've always had a pair of my own ever since.

This mic is the Audio Technica 3525.  It is a small/medium diaphragm cardioid condenser that was first released around 1998.

The AT3525 has been out of production for a while, but they aren't that hard to find online.  I don't know why they didn't make it.  The only flaw I can find is that the shock mount it comes with, which is made with rubber bands, does not hold the mic very securely, especially after a few years of use.  The bands are easily replaced with some hair ties stretched tightly across the mount.

These microphones are my go to pair for recording acoustic guitar.  They win over my more expensive microphones almost every time.  There was only one old Martin guitar I recorded that didn't agree with them.  As long as I take the time to find the right placement on the instrument, I can usually get the track to sound just like the guitar does in my room.  In the right spot they sound crisp and shimmery, with just the right amount of low end.

These microphones are proof that you shouldn't pass up a good deal on a mic, no matter how junky it may look.  Try it out, experiment, and you may just find your next go-to for specific application.
